OpenAI's o1: The 'Strawberry' Model Arrives. Slower But Smarter.

Updated: Sep 23

The much-anticipated "Strawberry" model from OpenAI has finally arrived under the name o1. As reported by The Verge, "The rumored 'Strawberry' model is here, and the company says it can handle more complex queries — for a steep price."

This release marks a significant milestone in AI development, particularly for businesses considering advanced AI integration. Let's break down the key points:

  1. Reasoning Capabilities: o1 is OpenAI's first "reasoning" model, designed to tackle complex problems more effectively than its predecessors. It excels in areas like coding and mathematics, potentially revolutionizing how businesses approach complex problem-solving.

  2. Performance Metrics: In coding competitions, o1 reached the 89th percentile of participants. It scored an impressive 83% on a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, compared to GPT-4o's 13%.

  3. Trade-offs: While more powerful, o1 is slower and significantly more expensive than GPT-4o. API access costs $15 per million input tokens and $60 per million output tokens, a considerable increase from GPT-4o's rates.

  4. Limitations: o1 lacks some capabilities of GPT-4o, such as web browsing and image processing. It also underperforms on general knowledge queries.

  5. Future Implications: This model represents a step towards OpenAI's goal of creating autonomous AI agents capable of complex decision-making.

OpenAI's chief research officer Bob McGrew emphasizes the significance: "Fundamentally, this is a new modality for models in order to be able to solve the really hard problems that it takes in order to progress towards human-like levels of intelligence."

For small businesses, o1 signals the potential for more sophisticated AI tools in the near future. While its current pricing may be prohibitive for many, its capabilities hint at upcoming innovations that could transform complex data analysis, problem-solving, and coding projects.

As we navigate this new frontier in AI, it's crucial to stay informed and consider how these advancements might be leveraged in your business strategy. The slower but smarter o1 model could be a game-changer for industries requiring high-level problem-solving and analytical capabilities.
